£4.5 Million for Man Left Paralysed After Bike Forks Snapped

A man who was left with permanent paralysis when the carbon forks on his gravel bike snapped has secured compensation.

The accident happened when the man, who worked as a doctor for the NHS, was riding on a grass slope. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury when the front forks on his bike sheared in two. He now has no neurological function in his legs or torso and will need to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite the severity of his injuries, he has been able to continue his career in the NHS and has taken up hand cycling.

He brought a claim against the seller of the bike, continuing the claim against its insurers after it became insolvent. Photos on the seller's website at the time he purchased his bike showed identical bikes being ridden in mountainous terrain. However, testing showed that the forks on his bike were significantly thinner and weaker than forks obtained from another manufacturer.

Negotiations led to a settlement of £4.5 million being agreed shortly before a trial on the issue of liability was due to commence. The settlement, which was approved by the court, will ensure that his future care and accommodation needs can be met.
