What’s it like to work with us?
Our people are bright, capable and creative team players. Integrity and respect are values which are important to us and we look for these in the people we employ. Culturally, we are friendly and informal – like any firm there’s a hierarchy but you need to look hard to find it.

We have a strong, enviable track record in organic growth because we place great emphasis on the development of our employees, enabling them to fulfil their career goals and do their best work.

Our people mission statement is to be PROUD:

Proud to be Boys & Maughan people
Responsibility, Resilience and Responsive
Opportunities
Understanding of our clients and each other
Desire to achieve, succeed and excel

We have a significantly loyal client base because of the expertise of our people and their ability to identify and deliver the right individual legal solution to suit our clients’ needs. So as a member of our team, you will get to work alongside some specialists in their field, or you may be one yourself, but above all else you will be doing interesting work with great clients.

Lawyers will also experience public appreciation and acknowledgement of their work through ReviewSolicitors, where we often attract excellent feedback. Check now and you may see that we are ranked one of the top firms in the country. Administrators are also often complimented on this leading review platform. Our firm is committed to transparency, so you will see our prices displayed on our website in line with the SRA's requirements, and if you are a conveyancer, for example, you will receive regular new instructions via Perfect Portal where prospective clients can obtain a detailed quotation for our services.

In 2022 we established three new staff groups focusing on the opportunities and challenges faced by regional law firms such as ourselves. Involving 30 staff from across the business and led by our equity partners, the groups generate ideas and make recommendations in respect of wellbeing and diversity, green issues and our responsibilities to the local communities we serve. A wide cross section of staff are involved in the groups and colleagues who are new to the firm, are amongst the most active contributors.

We also like to have fun. If you’re new to the area and would like to get to know your colleagues better we have a social committee that regularly arranges local events and outings.

Where are we?
We have offices in five East Kent towns – Margate, Ramsgate, Birchington, Broadstairs and two offices in Canterbury. While we retain a consistent culture and approach in each office, their location offers something different to our people who work in them.

Why not come and meet us? If you are interested in one of our vacancies we will happily show you round our offices and introduce you to your potential colleagues.

We often help people relocate to local towns and villages and have notched up a number of success stories involving staff who have joined us to develop their career and because they wish to change their lifestyle.

Thanet and Canterbury has a wide range of excellent schools that we can tell you about if you have school age children. And if you are entirely new to the area, we will give you the inside track on the best locations in which to buy or rent, and can introduce you to local estate and letting agents. Speak to our HR Manager Kerry Curson on 01843 234000 or email Kerry if you would like details.

What types of careers does Boys & Maughan offer?
We like to provide an environment in which all our lawyers and non-lawyers can develop their personal, commercial and management skills. A number of our staff have been promoted multiple times and we like nothing more than to guide a future leader along their career path.

If you are considering a legal career you might wish to consider:

  • An apprenticeship - we have been recruiting apprentices of all ages since 2007. Boys & Maughan offers excellent prospects: 13 people have gone on to permanent jobs with us through our apprenticeship scheme so far and two have been promoted twice and become lawyers with significant levels of responsibility.
  • Legal Secretary – you’ll usually need GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) in English and Maths, experience of office work and word processing skills to join us as a legal secretary. If you have no previous experience you might like to take a course in audio transcription. Visit the Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs (ILSPA) for more information about this career.
  • Licensed Conveyancer - a licensed conveyancer is a qualified, professional property lawyer. In this role, you'll specialise in property law and will work on behalf of clients buying or selling property. Read an interview with Richard Durrant, our head of residential property, about some of the ways in which we support licensed conveyancers here
  • Chartered Legal Executive - a Chartered Legal Executive is a lawyer who has completed all the elements of the route to qualification at the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx). They often specialise in a particular area of law and work closely alongside our solicitors.
  • Solicitor - a career as a solicitor can be incredibly rewarding, providing a job that is intellectually challenging with many exciting opportunities. Solicitors are involved in almost all aspects of life, making the range of work diverse. Search for law careers on the Law Society website for more details of how to become a solicitor.

Law Graduate Programme
We currently have a dozen graduates at various stages of our programme and most wish to qualify as a solicitor, chartered legal executive or become a CLC lawyer.

Our graduates are encouraged to:

  • Take on duties that stretch their abilities, develop their expertise and prepare for practice
  • Make progress through promotion, leading to successfully applying for a training contract or professional qualification with CILEX or CLC
  • Experience varying aspects of our firm and demonstrate their skills.

Some firms have an annual intake of students on training contracts. Boys & Maughan’s approach is to develop and promote from within. Our training contracts are awarded to graduates who work with us for a period of time and demonstrate the necessary skills and aptitude to become a solicitor. We do not impose a limit on the number of trainees we employ at any one time, nor do we expect individuals to progress at the same pace. In September 2023 we appointed two internal candidates, pictured left and right below, and you can read their stories here

Mentoring future lawyers
We like to support and encourage future lawyers and legal administrators and, gladly, they often end up working for us.

In 2017 we established the Boys & Maughan Solicitors Civil Advocacy Competition, which takes place in the University of Kent’s Law School. Students usually start the competition with little or no courtroom procedural experience. With the fierce competition for pupilages and training contracts, mooting is an essential experience, particularly for those who want to become barristers or solicitor advocates.

In addition to the courtroom experience, we arrange for a number of our experienced lawyers and recruitment decision makers to meet with the Law School’s students to network, pitch for jobs and seek careers advice. Ihcene Khalfi is a good example of a student who got to know us and is now working for us full time. You can read Ihcene's story here

Charity work
Boys & Maughan actively supports local and national charities via events throughout the year such as wills promotions, coffee mornings, running and walking events and dress-down days.

Our main charity we have supported over a number of years is Pilgrims Hospices. Each year our private client team gives its time freely to the Hospice and it has donated tens of thousands of pounds to vital services at local Pilgrims Hospices over the past decade, through our unwavering support for the annual Make A Will campaign.

We are also involved in assisting Oasis, a Margate domestic violence refuge and at Christmas we usually like to collect and deliver food for local charities.

Boys & Maughan regularly offers legal and business know how to local community organisations. We get involved in local drop in legal advice clinics and a number of our partners and consultants are trustees for education providers, local charities and community organisations. Our staff are also represented in charitable organisations such as Rotary and Round Table.

Our lawyers also give interviews to local community radio station Academy FM Thanet on topical legal issues.

Andrew Baker, one of our equity partners, is a director of the Dreamland Heritage Trust, which was set up to deliver a 21st-century tourist attraction at Dreamland, Margate, based around the listed Scenic Railway and Cinema building.

Albert Burns Children’s Fund
Occasionally we are able to reach out to a much wider community and an example of this is the Albert Burns Children’s Fund.

The fund was created in memory of Thanet businessman Albert Burns who left instructions in his will for us to create a lasting legacy for children. He particularly wanted to support smaller charities that don’t have the resources of the larger children’s charities.

Albert had a particular affinity with India and in 2015 we used part of the fund to pay for a new children’s centre providing support and relief for a slum community in Goa. The facility, known as Albert’s Good News Centre has made a huge difference to the street children of the Moti Donger slum and is currently providing daily support to 185 women and children.

Since 2015 Kent Community Foundation has managed the Fund grant-making on our behalf and direct funding to local childrens’ groups and charities where it will make a significant impact locally.

Albert Burns Children’s Fund has so far awarded nearly £230k in grants across 55 different projects and expects to continue to add to these totals significantly in future years. To apply for funding through the Albert Burns Children’s Trust Fund visit KCF's website.

Diversity
Solicitors firms regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) are required to collect and publish their workforce diversity data using questions provided by the SRA. In 2023 we surveyed our staff and if you would like like to see the results click here. The SRA uses the information to monitor diversity within the profession and we also monitor diversity internally.

Recruitment agencies
Agencies, we have a strict preferred supplier list of recruitment partners and therefore ask you not to send unsolicited introductions to our colleagues and managers. Where speculative CV’s are submitted, we reserve the right to contact these candidates directly without any form of obligation from us to you.
